Porter, Mercy Anne (Goudey) Jeffery

Mercy Anne (Goudey) Jeffery Porter

Calvinist Baptist Cemetery, Marker #3

(~1824-1873)

Mercy Ann Goudey was born in Green Cove (now Port Maitland) about 1824 and died there (by then called Maitland) of cancer and consumption (tuberculosis) on 13 Nov 1873 at the age of 49. She was the daughter of Stephen and Mary (Haskell) Goudey who are buried in Island Cemetery, the active cemetery for Port Maitland and Beaver River.

Mercy married on 31 Dec 1846 Aaron Jeffery who was born in Tusket about 1826 and died in Maitland 25 July 1870. He is buried near her and named on the same grave marker although Mercy appears as the wife of Hazadiah Porter whom she married, as his second wife, in Maitland 15 Jul 1871, one year after Aaron’s death. Hazadiah was the son of James and Mahaleth (Saunders) Porter. Following Mercy’s death Hazadiah married a third time. He is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, as are his first wife, Lucy Frost, and his parents. We know of no children from either of Mercy’s marriages; however, the informant on Aaron’s death record was Ann Jeffery. Was she a daughter or did Mercy Anne go by the name of Ann? Hazadiah had nine children in his first marriage, seven of whom were living when he married Mercy Anne, the youngest being six years old.

More about Mercy Anne and her family appears in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.

Please leave a comment if you have any additional information about her, particularly about the reference to Ann Jeffery on Aaron’s death record. Was this the name Mercy Anne used or was there a daughter or daughter-in-law named Ann?
