Founders Cemetery, Marker #17
(1800-1855)
Ebenezer Corning was born in Yarmouth Township 6 May 1800 and died 29 July 1855. Although his grave marker says he was 54 years old when he died it appears he was actually 55 if the Yarmouth Vital Records which give his date of birth are correct.
Ebenezer married Eliza Raymond and had 6 children. Their son William Ebenezer is buried next to his father and named on the same marker.
After the death of Ebenezer, Eliza married Isaiah Crosby, as his 3rd wife. Isaiah is also buried in this cemetery. We have not discovered where Eliza is buried. Perhaps someone reading this could help.
Ebenezer was the 8th of 9 children of Jonathan and Mary (Foote) Corning. Mary was the daughter of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Ives) Foote. Zachariah, Elizabeth and their family came to Yarmouth Township from Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1769 and settled in Overton. About 1 January 1784 Zachariah sailed for Salem also in Essex County. Neither the vessel nor crew were heard from and were presumed lost at sea.
Ebenezer’s Corning ancestry goes back through his father Jonathan whose parents were Ebenezer and Abigail (Batchelder) Corning who came to Yarmouth Township in 1764, 5 years before the Foote family, but like them, came from Beverly and settled in Overton.
It is because of the Corning family grave markers in the Founders Cemetery that the Old Stones – Old Beaver River and Port Maitland Cemeteries Preservation Society was formed. When the Corning family wanted to hold a family reunion in 1998 they were embarrassed that the Cemetery where some of their ancestors were buried was in such terrible shape. You can read the story elsewhere but it was the initiative taken by the Corning family to approach the Heritage Coordinator for the Town and Municipality of Yarmouth, Linda Campbell, that lead to the creation of the Old Stones Society.
