Perry, Helen M.

Helen M Perry

Founders Cemetery, Marker #22

(1852-1854)

Helen was born about 21 Oct 1852 and died 24 Feb 1854 at the age of 16 months and 3 days. We do not know the cause of her death. Everything we know about her comes from her grave marker. Her parents, Charles Alfred and Phoebe Elizabeth (Corning) Perry, both died at young ages, Charles at 24 and Phoebe at 22. All three are named on the same marker.

Helen is a Mayflower descendant. Through her father she is descended from Mayflower passengers William Brewster and through her mother descended from passengers: Isaac Allerton, John Billington, John Howland, John Tilley and Richard Warren.

One of Helen’s ancestors, through her father, may have been William Knowlton, whose grave marker in Shelburne is among the earliest for any English settler in Nova Scotia—it simply reads “William Knowlton, 1632”.

More about Helen, and her parents will be found in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.

Please leave a comment if you have any additional information about Helen, particularly about her place of birth and death and the cause of her death. Did she die in Nova Scotia or in Salem, Mass. where her mother died?

[1] An ahnentafel (ancestor table) is a family tree without a chart. #1 is the source person, #2 is that person’s father, whose father is #4. To follow the father’s direct paternal ancestry double the number each time to #8, 16, 32 etc. The mother of the source person is #3 (the wife is always one number higher than the husband) whose father is #6, whose father is #12, again doubling in the same way as the father’s generations. #7 will be the source person’s her maternal grandmother whose father will be #14, whose father will be #28 and so on. With the exception of the source person, even numbers are male and uneven numbers are female. Uneven numbers usually introduce a new surname into the family tree.
