Jenkins, Clarissa (Saunders)

Clarissa (Saunders) Jenkins

Free Will Baptist Cemetery, Marker #4

(~1829-1877)

Clarissa was born about 1829 and died 11 Oct 1877 at the age of 48. She married George H Jenkins, a shipwright, probably in a Baptist ceremony performed on Digby Neck by Rev John G Morse sometime after 13 March 1849 when their marriage bond was signed. The guarantors of the bond were George himself and Shubael Eldridge of Prince William, Digby County. After Clarissa’s death George married Gertrude Raymond, daughter of William S and Eunice (Landers) Raymond who are buried nearby in the Calvinist Baptist Cemetery. George’s mother, Hannah (Goudey) Jenkins, is buried in the Free Will Baptist Cemetery. The burial place of George’s father, William Jenkins, has not been found.

Clarissa and George had five known children. A daughter, Sophronia “Fronie”, is buried near her mother and named on the same grave marker. A son, George, who died in Minneapolis, married Amanda Goldfinch whose parents, Henry and Matilda (Bennison) Goldfinch, are buried in the Free Will Baptist  Cemetery.

We know very little about Clarissa. The names of her parents have not been found. There may be a clue on her marriage bond which was witnessed by Samuel Saunders. Was he her father? As the marriage was likely performed on Digby Neck, is that where Clarissa was born?

More about Clarissa and her children appears in the Old Stones Family Group Sheet Index.
